in the books, katniss is described as having olive skin and dark hair. some are claiming that, in choosing to only audition white actresses for the role of Katniss, the hunger games franchise is guilty of systematic whitewashing.
i will say, first off, that i think they ought to have auditioned actresses of other races. that is disappointing to me, but i understand why they didn’t:
first off, katniss is also described in the books as having blue eyes. try finding an actual olive skinned person with blue eyes (let alone one who could act well enough to play katniss), it’s super rare and probably a product of all the inbreeding in the tiny futuristic district where she lives. it was more important that she look like gale and the other people from the seam, so that they could be believably “cousins” later, which would mean that the directors would have needed a whole slew of blue eyed, olive skinned actors, because looking like gale (having that “seam look”) is a seriously important plotpoint in book # 2.
Secondly, Katniss’ mother in the book has blonde hair and blue eyes. her sister does, too, and she and katniss have the same father. is it even possible for a blonde haired, blue eyed woman to have sex with an olive skinned, blue eyed man and produce a child that looks like katniss?
the fact is, katniss’ appearance in the books is basically genetically impossible. i think that the movie did a good job staying true to the races of the characters… think of all the people who were pissed that rue and cinna were black! people will never be fuly satisfied with the way a book is converted into a movie, but to my knowledge all of the black characters in the book were played by black actors.
i’d be enraged if i thought that the directors had made katniss white in direct opposition to the text, but i genuinely do not think that that was the case. the author of the series was directly involved in the filmmaking process and i’m sure that she would have objected if that was the case, as well. i understand and agree with anger at systematic whitewashing, but i don’t think that the hunger games is guilty of it. i think that the main concern was staying true to the plot.
i am also deeply grateful to this franchise for popularizing a female hero that is not overly sexualized or obsessed with the men in her life. in a time where women’s rights have somehow become a voting issue again, the girls in our country need a mockingjay of their own, a pop-culture champion who can show them that girls can kick ass just the same as boys, WITHOUT being sexualized and objectified.
that’s my opinion, anyway.
so, let me break this down point by point.
First of all, you say that you “understand” why they limited the casting call to just white actresses. Why do you understand that? Cause I sure as shit don’t understand why they would limit a casting call for an OBVIOUSLY WoC character to just white actresses.
So your first point and second point: first of all, you’re wrong, her eyes are not described as BLUE, they’re described as GRAY. And even if they were blue in the book, who fucking cares? So it’s better to get a WHITE actress and give her a tan, then getting a WoC actress and giving her contacts? You harp on and on about this eye color thing (and you’re completely wrong about her eye color to begin with) as if it’s a huge deal breaker. I would rather have a WoC get the opportunity to be in a major film franchise with the wrong eye color than have a character be whitewashed.
You pull out the “well, there’s SOME PoC characters, so why not just be happy about it” line of bullshit—the fact of the matter is that it’s really fucking frustrating that PoC, ESPECIALLY WoC rarely get leading roles in big time films. And you’re right—Katniss is one of the best female characters to come along in a long time. So why couldn’t she have stayed a woman of color like she’s described in the books?
I’ll tell you the reason—companies think it’s not financially safe to have people of color as leading figures. A majority of films, especially ones designed to make big blockbuster bucks like The Hunger Games, are pretty much targeted toward the majority—film companies aren’t going to take a risk on casting a PoC in the lead (unless it’s someone safe like Will Smith) because then they might make less money. And if you don’t see how that is an inherently racist problem within the film industry (that has been going on for a long, long, long time) and how it directly relates to whitewashing in films, please take all the fucking seats.
You talk about how girls need a female character to look up to—but if you stop and look at a majority of female characters in general, most of them, good and bad, are white. For little girls of color, strong female characters who look like them are few and far between. And that is a problem.
I just realized what a strong word “should” is. It’s much different that “could” or “might”. It’s a very certain word, suggesting that there are no ifs, ands or buts.
Cinna SHOULD be white. Like how there SHOULD be 31 days in January and people SHOULD have 10 fingers and 10 toes.

SANFORD, Fla. — Police have released audio 911 tapes in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed teenager killed by a neighborhood watch captain while walking home from a store.
In eight chilling recordings, made the night of February 26, listeners can hear the frightened voices of neighbors calling to report to screams for help, gunshots, and then that someone was dead.
In perhaps the most disturbing of the recordings, a frightened voice cries out for help and pleading “No! No!” and then wailing.
And for the first time, we hear the voice of George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch captain who admitted to police that he shot Martin, who was walking home from a convenience store to his father’s home in the gated community. Zimmerman has not been arrested or charged in the shooting.
“This guy looks like he’s up to no good, or he’s on drugs or something,” Zimmerman tells the 911 operator. “He’s just staring, looking at all the houses. Now he’s coming toward me. He’s got his hand in his waistband. Something’s wrong with him.”
Zimmerman described Martin as wearing a hoodie and sweatpants or jeans. He continues: “He’s coming to check me out. He’s got something in his hands. I don’t know what his deal is. Can we get an officer over here?”
“These assholes always get away,” he says to the operator. Zimmerman is then heard giving directions to the dispatcher. “Shit, he’s running,” Zimmerman says.
“Are you following him?” the dispatchers asked.
“Yes,” Zimmerman responds.
“We don’t need you to do that,” the dispatcher says.
This is what happens when people knowingly perpetuate stereotypes. This is what happens when college kids have “ghetto” or “hoppin the border” parties. This is what happen when the media only casts Black men in stereotypical roles. That shit isn’t innocent. It isn’t “just a costume”. It isn’t “just clean fun”. That shit gets people killed.
If I had a desk, I’d flip it over. I’m so angry. I want to cry or scream or something, but there’s nothing I can do.

okay seeing as I haven’t blogged in quite some time, I feel it is about time that I made a statement fully representative of some of the things I have experienced since my brief break from tumblr-ing. and as regular reader of this blog may know I tend to focus on equal rights, the dangers of certain religious ideals and of course things that make me angry. so today I’m going to focus my attention on another pet hate that I have admittedly brought up prior to this blog.
okay so when in town the other day doing my usual weekend things with my friends, I happened to over-hear a joke being spouted by a kid whom I know and happen to know is quite liberal in his ways. he was telling a joke about black people and yes it is quite funny because it fits to a stereotype that in this day and age people know is not true, in fact the entire impact of the joke has to be drawn from the assumption that the person telling the joke knows about the stereotype and also knows that it is not true, this kiddies is known as satire, a way in which someone can make a statement by representing the other side in a bad way by use of demonstration.
however the impact of this joke was soon ruined when another guy I know who happens to be black, comes over and says. “you can’t say that!” and the kid says “oh really? well why not?” and the other guy said “because it’s racist”…
and this my friends is where an issue is going to arise because if we are aiming for an entirely accepting society where everyone is seen as equal then jokes about each other should be seen as just that… jokes. not something for the other side to see as hate speech or racist views, me and my friends make jokes at each other all the time, its known as banter?
I mean come on guys seriously, how do we expect to break down the barriers of race and culture that come between our countries when one party can’t hear one little joke before its all part of some big conspiracy to smite his people, seriously its this serious attitude that causes the “kicky-punchy” nature that has come to be a commodity when discussing the barriers of race and culture.
so here’s an idea, instead of getting all defensive because someone makes a minor joke about your country or your culture, try not to take it personally because lets be honest, we had no fucking say in where we were born, so lets cut the patriotic bullshit and start going about our lives without the threat of having our head kicked in for the sake of a fucking joke. seriously its living with this attitude that causes all the hate in the first place… and come to think of it… I never did hear what the difference between a park bench and a black man was… another mystery I suppose.

And what is up with this idea that I keep encountering in people where they think that because they know the stereotypes are wrong, it’s okay for them to use them and joke about them? NO. The levels of wrong are off the fucking radar here.
