Cause there’s this smug douchey dood there who’s spewed out gems like (and I’m paraphrasing here):

“Slavery was just like having a crappy life! A woman who had been raised and lived her entire life with white privilege would have been okay if she and her child had been thrust into slavery, it just would have been a lot crappier! Because, you know, slaves didn’t face shit like abuse, beatings, rape, torture, murder, lack of humanity and autonomy! It just kinda sucked for them!”

“People shouldn’t be resentful towards institutions that have continually excluded them, like the medical industry, which inevitably led to misdiagnoses, suffering and death of people in those excluded groups! They were only doing their best back then! It’s not like this kind of shit continues to happen in current day institutions!”

I’m just waiting for him to say today while we discuss Zora Neale Hurston’s “Sweat” that “omg, it’s not HIS fault that he beat her—it’s just how it WAS back then!”

I get so heated in that class and the teacher doesn’t help because she’s one of those open-interpretation “ALL opinions are equally valid!” types. No, whether or not slavery was more than just “kinda crappy” is not open for debate, end of story.
