Has it ever dawned upon White audiences that when Blacks are playing roles that take place during Slavery or the Jim Crow Era, that it isn’t “acting” in the traditional sense? Real, raw and wild emotions are aroused by stepping into those ancestral roles. Sometimes it’s very difficult to realize what’s real and what isn’t. It’s an experience I’ve had several times on the stage, and it’s transformative. I hope to go through it again. It’s very cleansing. But can also be quite triggering. Which is why other White actors I’ve worked with showed hesitation to say the N Word a bit, and wanted to “hold back”. Because they’re afraid some real shit might come out and wigs will get snatched.
